Indian man divorces wife using impersonator

Sanjib Saha who took an impersonator to a court in Kolkata, posing as his wife so he could get a divorce is to face legal action lawyers said today.

He showed up to court with a woman he claimed to be his wife, and told the court they both agreed that they should have a divorce, the court granted the divorce straight away.

Dipika, 27, Sanjibs real wife found out about the divorce in April when he presented her with the decree from the Alipore Lok Adalat. She was then asked to move out with their son, it is reported she went to live with her parents.

It came as a shock to Dipika when after a few days she found out that her husband had moved a joint divorce petition. The case went to Lok Adalat so it could me quick, the immediate divorce decree was issued.

Dipika appealed the decision at a higher court, claiming her husband was cheating and the original divorce was suspended. Kaushik Chanda, lawyer for Dipika, said that “The case exposed the legal loopholes in our system”.
