Easy divorce has sent pensioners into depression

A recent report from the Institute for Public Policy Research said an increasing number of pensioners are breaking up and feel isolated and depressed.

The 1960s divorce reform allowed the divorce rate to treble is now taking effect on people now reaching old age. The liberal reforms of 1969 made ‘quickie’ decrees available so in the 1970s people took advantage of the new law. This and that fact that women tend to outlive their husbands is has increased depression in people of old age.

Short and long term mental health problems have risen after divorce, with 19 percent of separated or divorced women and 17 percent of men being affected, reported by Jessica Allen the IPPR author. It’s also reported that the most significant factor of low well-being amongst the old is when they live alone.

It’s estimated that 2.4 million people over 65 suffer from depression, that’s more than 1 in 5. Although it’s said that two percent of pensioners who live with someone have said they often feel lonely, that’s not a lot compared to the 17 per cent who feel lonely living alone.
