We came across this story of a divorce scam in the news and thought we would share it with you. We are still in disbelief that a court clerk could get away with fraud in a court of law! What audacity she must have had to think she would get away with it, we have reported the story below.
Olga Avila, who worked for 16 years as a clerk for the courts office, was sentenced to two years of house arrest, followed by two years of probation.
Avila, pleaded guilty to 27 counts of official misconduct. She was originally charged with 52 counts of fraud, unlawful compensation, practicing law without a license, notary fraud and official misconduct.
She worked in Miami-Dade court as a clerk, she was accused of offering people she met in the court house a quickie divorce, she would charge couples $670 for dealing with their divorce papers, the filing fee was $394 so it was said they she kept the difference for herself.
