Divorce law across eight EU Nations

There has been an unprecedented move today by the eight European Union nations to push ahead on the divorce laws which aims to make it easier for couples of different nationalities to divorce.

Austria, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovenia and Spain are the eight EU countries who sent official letters to the European Commission; this will draw up a plan for them to work more closely together.

The procedure which has been launched– is also known in Brussels as “enhanced cooperation” will be the first time it’s been used in the European Union, a diplomat said they are hoping for other countries to get involved and they hope to create a good momentum.

After Sweden resisted all attempts to agree on divorce laws across the 27-nation bloc, the letters became necessary, although today the EU’s executive body said they have not received the letters as if yet.

The divorce rate from couples of different nations is approximately 170,000, and each year the EU run into problems over which court they should divorce in, this just adds to the stress and emotion the couple are already going through.

Some nation’s demands a period of separation before ant court divorce begins others want the divorce over as quickly as possible, different laws are recognized in some countries but not others and Malta is one of the only countries that do not allow divorce.

Gay marriage is only recognised in a few member states.

Finland, Latvia, Czech Republic and Poland do not back the new law, they do not want a two speed Europe, and fear it could open up to many other areas.
