Gay ex-governor McGreevey divorce made final

It’s taken four years for the divorce of James E. McGreevey and Dina Matos McGreevey to be finalised. The then governor of New Jersey announced in 2004 on National television that he was a “gay American” and handed in his resignation as the governor.

But on Friday the month long divorce trial ended, closing the book on a marriage filled with lies, allegations, infidelity and deceit.

It was said by Stephen Haller, McGreevey’s lawyer that the ex governor want to just move on with his life “privately”.

Matos did not get much of what she wanted in the divorce settlement, after an abrupt ending to the trial, McGreevey only has to pay $250 a week child support for their 6 year-old daughter. Mantos was hoping for $2,500 month alimony for four years and $1,750 a month in child support.

Superior Court judge Karen Cassidy also seemed to be on McGreevey’s side as she ruled that Mantos would not be entitled to assets from the McGreevey’s tell-all book “The Confession”. Although Mantos will receive half of the estranged couples savings and investment holdings which total $109,000.

Mantos was looking to proceed with a fraud claim against McGreevey accusing him of leading her into a marriage to cover up the fact he was gay, and that he needed the heterosexual relationship to move up in politics. But it’s likely after the judge ruled that Mantos was not to be compensated for the 13 months of high-class lifestyle she missed out on from the governor’s office when he resigned, that Mantos may now not see fit to proceed.

The judge ruled that the marital lifestyle that Mantos received whilst married to McGreevey would not be taken into consideration.

The judge noted that McGreevey did not need to seek employment as he was able to rely on his affluent boyfriend to provide for him, so he does not need to sustain himself.

Cassidy, the superior judge also highlighted the animosity she felt during the trial between the couple, and said she was disappointed with the dirty laundry that had been plastered over the press for such public figures within the state of New Jersey. The couple agreed to share custody of their daughter.
