Divorce in Missouri is set to get more difficult

9:10 am Legal, World Divorce Stories

I just read an article in the KSPR news about a new process of Divorce, well if you live in Missouri.
In some countries you can get married and divorced as quick as blinking your eyelid, it’s not going to be that simple now in Missouri. It’s not going to be as easy to represent yourself anymore.

The days in Missouri of getting a quick on-line divorce maybe coming to an end, mainly because a lot of the forms that are being offered do not comply with Missouri courts and the courts will just not take them.

There has been a new rule added to the books says Deanna Scott, Director of legal services of Southern Missouri, she also added it will be mandatory for soon-to-be divorcees to think twice and hard about going through the process without an attorney. People have to take an online assessment and in some cases, a class about the risks of self-representation.

Scott went on to say that although it is a more lengthily process its better than getting the wrong papers, some people think you can just go to court and get a divorce, they are mistaken there is a huge backlog in the system. The judges have to give potential divorcees a tutorial as to how the divorce system works. This take up more valuable time.

With the growing number of people filing for divorce, with some people believing it’s a knock on effect from the poor economy, the invalid forms are just making the paperwork more painful for the courts, the on-line divorces were available to supposedly make things easier but it seems that it’s actually working in reverse for the courts.

This is not to say that all on-line quick divorce systems are invalid or bad, but the advice if you do get the paperwork off the internet is to make sure it complies with Missouri courts. The Supreme Court offers the information on its website. It’s free and you can guarantee the forms will be accepted in state courts. Click here to get to the Supreme Court’s website about self-representation.

We hope this article doesn’t put more stress on a already stressful time, but it’s better to be prepared, I would have a good look at the self represent website I have linked above, and make sure you do all the right checks before you head rushing to the divorce courts.

If you are are going through or have got divorced in Missouri and want to comment on this issue, please feel free. Likewise if you are a lawyer from Missouri we would also like you to comment.
