We wrote a few weeks ago about the Nigerian man who has 86 wives and was told he had to divorce 82 of them from the Islamic authorities, the 84-year old man has now accepted a decree to divorce 82 wives.

It was reported by the BBC, who was quoting a local emir that Mohammad Bello Abubakar agreed to the mass divorce at the weekend.

The 84-year old, Abubakar, would have faced a death penalty under the Sharia Law if had not accepted the decree. In 2000 this law was reintroduced to the Muslim-majority Niger state in northwest Nigeria

Abubakar was interview by the BBC several weeks ago and he claimed that he thought there was no punishment in the Koran for having more than four wives; Abubakar was a former preacher and teacher. Although the Nigerian Supreme court for Islamic affairs have clearly stated that under Sharia limits a man to just four wives, so he had to divorce the others.

Although the death sentence has been lifted, he could still face eviction from his home.
