Divorce: it’s not just the young kids that are affected

In the United States approximately one out of two marriages end up in divorce which is a pretty high percentage, we all know that if the estranged couple have children then this can make the divorce even more disruptive and painful, but what if the children are actually grown up, how does it affect them?

In recent studies we can see that grown up children are also affected badly from the loss of stability in the family, as a young adult moving into the world of independence they need their parents advise and stability to guide them through the transition. If the young adult’s parents are going through a divorce this can make them feel alone, it is important for the divorcing parents to reinsure their adult child that they will still be there for them throughout and after the divorce.

If you are a young adult child there are a few steps you can take to help you through this difficult time of divorce, it is normal to grieve and there are support groups around that can help you overcome this feeling. Communicate your feelings with your parents, sometimes they may forget that you are going through their divorce, just because you are an adult child it doesn’t mean you are any less affected than a young child.

You must also try to forgive your parents, if the reason they are divorcing is because they do not love each other anymore, then try to support both parents in this difficult time, don’t hate your parents for falling out of love they deserve a happy life just like you do. Forgiving is also very good for healing, try to think positively, if your parents have been unhappy for years, this could be a time that both could find new loves and new happiness. In time, the new family structure could give you double the support that you would have got from your parents being un-happily married.
